In the Society, Culture and Social Change major you will develop your understanding of society and culture and how history has shaped the world we live in. You will gain skills and knowledge to analyze social issues such as poverty, environmental change, human migration, mental illness and inequality, and to imagine alternative futures. The major will introduce you to contemporary approaches to understanding social inequality and cultural diversity; capitalism and consumerism; gender, race and class; power, exclusion and community. You can choose to explore topics such as cultural production and consumption, multiculturalism and racism, or social responses to mental illness.
The major will equip you with the professional research, analytical and writing skills that allow you to analyze current and emerging social problems and contribute to debates on social issues, public affairs and policy development. It will provide you with a solid foundation for working in government and community sector organizations, in advocacy, welfare and research.
