The Politics minor gives you the foundations you need to understand how power is used in different systems of government and how local, national and global institutions operate and interact. You will be introduced to the different ideas, ideologies and interests that underpin politics, and compare the various institutions, processes, beliefs and cultures that societies have developed for settling conflicts, ordering priorities and distributing wealth. You will also examine how these different ideas and institutions shape the ways governments behave, and the policies they adopt. By its nature, politics is an argumentative discipline, so the minor will develop your ability to think critically and weigh up competing arguments.
Undertaking a Politics minor at La Trobe will connect you to experts in political theory, nationalism, democracy and democratisation, as well as Australian politics and institutions, international relations of the Asia-Pacific, and the politics of modern China, Russia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
