To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Mental Health, students must complete 120 credit points in totalconsisting of: 60 credit points core subjects and 60 credit points of Core - Specialist subjects  

Course intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Apply and evaluate advanced knowledge and skills to complex clinical nursing practice in mental health care
2.
Perform and evaluate clinical nursing assessments appropriate for mental health care
3.
Critically analyse information to enable informed clinical decision making based to solve problems
4.
Critically evaluate models of care to achieve personalized care strategies that meet the life and health needs of mental health consumers
5.
Develop and evaluate evidence-based nursing plans that support therapeutic relationships with mental health consumers and their families and carers that are characterized by co-constructive care and collaborative engagement
6.
Generate effective communication skills to effectively and sensitively work with colleagues, people accessing mental health services and the public in accordance with professional ethical standards
7.
Practice professional person centred care and advocacy independently as a team member in mental health settings in accordance with professional ethical standards
8.
Develop and evaluate learning strategies that are responsive to reflective practice

Work based learning (placement) requirements

Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the College based Placements Operation Team or Experiential Learning Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.
