Core subjects relate to areas such as counselling skills (including motivational interviewing), core psychosocial factors that can impact on rehabilitation, case management, vocational rehabilitation, rehabilitation services (e.g. mental health) and a 20-day placement in second semester first year. As a La Trobe graduate you may be eligible for our 10% Alumni Advantage when you apply for a full-fee postgraduate coursework program. To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies, students must have completed 120 credit points of study, comprised of:105 credit points of core subjects15 credit points of core-choice subjects

Course intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse how rehabilitation theory and philosophy can be applied to produce better rehabilitation outcomes
2.
Synthesise and apply case management and case load management theory and practice for the effective provision of rehabilitation services
3.
Critically analyse how disability and disadvantage, and/or disability policy and legislation can impact on rehabilitation service provision and outcomes
4.
Demonstrate the ability to evaluate, analyse and synthesise the efficacy of rehabilitation services
5.
Critically analyse vocational assessment, counselling, and/or training strategies and how they can impact on rehabilitation outcomes
6.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively use counselling skills to achieve desired outcomes (e.g. behaviour change associated with vocational and/or avocational goals) in rehabilitation settings
7.
Critically analyse how to provide lifetime services for those in need as a result of serious injury and demonstrate how this can be applied to produce better rehabilitation outcomes
8.
Critique core theory and behaviour that lead to and promote effective job-seeking skills and demonstrate how this can be applied to produce better rehabilitation outcomes

Course features

Work based learning (placement) requirements

Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the College based Placements Operation Team or Experiential Learning Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.

The course provides a pathway for employment as a rehabilitation counsellor.

Professional recognition

The Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies is accredited by the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (ASORC). Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Studies may apply for membership with ASORC.

Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
