To qualify for the award of Master of Exercise Physiology, students must complete 180 credit points as follows: 180 core credit-points

Course intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse health outcomes and data to design and deliver a broad range of health care services as appropriate, complying with the foundational scope of practice of an accredited exercise physiologist.
2.
Analyse individual risk, capacity and function and apply appropriate risk mitigation strategies when designing and implementing clinical exercise programs for people with health conditions and injury.
3.
Apply relevant clinical frameworks to support the adoption and compliance with clinical exercise, guide treatment, and communicate these effectively to individuals and members of the health care team.
4.
Evaluate and adapt communication strategies to enhance teamwork, interprofessional practice, and clinical outcomes.
5.
Reflect on published evidence and individual practices to refine and ensure health care practices are safe and respectful for people with diverse backgrounds.
6.
Evaluate, synthesise and create evidence surrounding the delivery of clinical exercise services to lead new concepts for professional practice.

Work based learning (placement) requirements

Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the Office of the Provost Placements and WBL Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.

Career outcomes

The demand for accredited exercise physiologists is high, and expected to increase in future years to address the rise in chronic disease and supporting our ageing population. Prepare for a rewarding career in settings such as private practice, public health organisations, hospitals, community centres, aged care and disability, workplace health and rehabilitation providers, policy and leadership. Possible roles for exercise physiologists include:

  • chronic disease prevention, treatment and management
  • injury rehabilitation
  • case management
  • health promotion
  • education and research.

Professional recognition

The Master of Exercise Physiology is currently undergoing re-accreditation by Exercise and Sports Science, Australia (ESSA). Graduates of the Master of Exercise Physiology may apply for membership with ESSA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree.
