On successful completion you will be able to:
1.
Describe significant concepts applicable to the behaviour, design and construction of water and wastewater supply systems, and treatment facilities
2.
Determine the quantity and quality of water required for residential and industrial water supply, the quantity and quality of wastewater generated by different types of users and the environmental impact of the use of effluent from treatment plants
3.
Apply fundamental engineering concepts to develop specialist models of supply and distribution of water and wastewater transportation
4.
Appraise environmental impacts of the use and disposal of effluent from treatment plants considering professional accountability.
5.
Calculate the size of pipes required to satisfactorily transport present and future quantities of water for residential use, for wastewater disposal and for irrigation purposes

Learning activities

  • Theory and worked examples are provided in the lectures. The knowledge is then practised in the workshops and applied in assignments, quizzes and final exam.
  • A well-established pipeline design software is introduced and students practise the software by designing a water supply system in an assignment.
  • Students learn how to develop a simple sewer hydraulics tool that can be employed for wastewater pipeline design.
  • A virtual site visit to wastewater treatment plant is introduced to increase the understanding of the related theory given in the lectures.
