Overview

Honours degree students are selected on the basis of their performance in the final year of the pass degree. There is no Department of Environmental Science so the honours year and projects are carried out under the auspices of a department in the Faculty, usually Ecology, Environment and Evolution (Environmental Geoscience). The honours year is structured according to principles applied to the science discipline of the thesis supervisor and involves an extended scientific investigation into a scientific problem relating to the environment and some course-work relevant to the project. Approval of each fourth year enrolment must be given by the supervisor and the Environmental Science Coordinator.

Develop independent learning and research skills by locating, interrogating and evaluating relevant scientific information to generate a scientific report.

Solve and creatively find solutions to a complex, unfamiliar, real world scientific and technical problem consistent with the faculty and professional standards.

Use numerical calculations and graphical representations to manipulate and interpret numerical data and evidence from experiments, scientific reports and journals

Present coherent explanations supported by evidence in grammatically correct prose in a scientific report that has appropriate referencing, and employs academic integrity and scientific rigour.

Conduct a clearly spoken presentation to communicate logically the results of the scientific research carried out (including theoretical concepts).
