Environmental regulation has expanded from a domestic phenomenon to one that has both global impacts and global participants. In this subject, we will determine when the international community is likely to act with respect to environmental problems, what legal processes it uses to address these problems, and how to assess the success of these regulatory interventions. We will also examine how the principles of international environmental law have influenced the development of domestic Australian environmental law, including in relation to ecologically sustainable development, climate change and biodiversity protection. Additionally, we will examine the domestic distribution of environmental governance between the Commonwealth, state and local governments, as well as domestic processes of strategic environmental planning, development approvals and environmental impact assessment.
