Overview

In this subject, students will develop practical abilities in both receptive and production skills in Auslan to a level of basic communicative competence. Students are introduced to the key grammatical structures of Auslan and the use of the language in its appropriate cultural and social context.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Recognise and respond to a range of beginner level vocabulary and grammatical constructions in Auslan.
2.
Produce a range of beginner level vocabulary items and grammatical constructions in Auslan.
3.
Compare and contrast Auslan and English vocabulary and grammar.
4.
Compare and contrast the cultural and social contexts in which Auslan and English are used.

Learning activities

Signing skills practice, classroom activities and written responses to comprehension questions, written class exercises, analysing sign language video data.

Quota information

Quota management strategy: Enrolment accepted until quota reached
Quota reason:Student enrolment needs to be capped because there is only one staff member coordinating the subject and a limited number of qualified casual staff available to help with the tutorials.
Quota - conditions or rules:

Quota of 130 students to be enrolled for the Semester 1 instance.  Quota numbers entered for each Semester 1 instance for indication only.  Total of 130 students accepted across all instances.

Quota of 75 students to be enrolled for the Winter instance.
