Overview

Successful public sector leaders are intelligent, intensely curious and articulate. They know the way governments work and how policies are crafted over time. This practical hands-on program is aimed at government officers and managers who want to develop their policy skills and leadership potential. The subject is ideal for those who currently work in a role which is affected by policy, or for anyone who needs to understand the conceptual framework for the policy work they already do. It challenges participants to think cleverly about policy. The subject is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to make a major contribution to policy development and policy leadership. Senior public sector leaders from across a variety of portfolio areas share their experiences and perspectives.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Examine the context and complexity of public policy work

Examine the steps to successful public policy making, including issue analysis, policy options, the budget process, consultation and co-ordination

Explore the crucial interaction between public servants and Ministers particularly in relation to the Budget and Expenditure Review Committee and the Public Accounts and Estimates Committees

Develop public policy skills through practical exercises including the application of case studies and a 2-day simulation culminating in group presentations in Parliament House
