Overview

In this subject, you study professional and creative writers in action by participating in a regional writers festival and undertaking project-based learning. There are three phases within this subject. 1. In the pre-event phase, you are introduced to key concepts, topics and skill, and read the work of a selected … For more content click the Read more button below. 2. You will have an immersion experience where you attend the festival with a specific program of activities in mind to support your project. 3. After the festival, you complete your project and assessments using the information and experience gained through the event. This block mode subject occurs over 5 days, including attendance at the writers festival (including a weekend). Festival dates and sites change from year to year, so students should consult with the subject coordinator and check the Handbook for further updates.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Apply and communicate a broad range of conceptual and discipline-specific knowledge relating to the form and content of a specific festival event.
2.
Critically evaluate and apply a range of styles and genres appropriate to different audiences and particular publications.
3.
Critically research a relevant topic, using fieldwork, library and online resources effectively in the service of a self-directed project

Learning activities

  • Preparatory reading prior to the festival, focused on concepts around writers festivals, and the programmed writers and themes.
  • Full day interactive classes taught on site immediately before and after the festival
  • Briefing and discussions of the nature of writers festivals, arts tourism, and event organisation
  • Preparation and production of an oral presentation (delivered as video or audio) on your experience of the festival, including interviews with festival participants, and critical reflection.
  • Production of a portfolio of writing relating to an aspect or theme of the festival and suitable for online publication.
  • Research of an issue/topic that will feature in the program and write an essay that discusses the contribution of a festival author to that topic.
