In this subject you will a take a comparative approach to governance and planning law by comparing the planning systems governing land use and development across various states, then focusing on the relevant Acts and related legislation in Victoria . Topics covered include: planning as a process and the limitations of land use and development controls; the principles of judicial review of administrative action; scheme amendment; permit applications and applications for review; enforcement; and compensation for land acquisition and the impact of planning decisions. You will then focus on the formulation and implementation of planning policies and development controls on land in Victoria.
Capstones provide students with a way of integrating and applying knowledge and skills gained throughout their course.

Develop an understanding of how planning schemes operate in different states, and assess the purposes and uses of various approaches to land use planning

Develop an understanding of statutory planning elements by processing applications for planning approvals to achieve the objectives of planning and environmental protection

Further develop research and writing skills through independent research

Understand the principal elements of the Victorian planning system and related administrative processes, and of environmental and planning legislation.
