Overview

In this subject students will develop fundamental knowledge and skills required in clinical mental health practice. Students will develop comprehensive assessment and management skills and recognise the interrelationship between a person's medical, social and psychological health. This subject provides a theoretical and practical foundation that prepares students for ethically oriented professional practice. This subject enables students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and specialised clinical proficiency. Using independent judgment, you will plan, implement and evaluate practice in mental health contexts.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Perform and evaluate clinical assessments appropriate for mental health care.

Critically analyse information to enable informed clinical decision making based to solve problems.

Develop and evaluate evidence-based nursing plans that support therapeutic relationships with mental health consumers and their families and carers that are characterized by co-constructive care and collaborative engagement.

Develop and evaluate learning strategies that are responsive to reflective practice.

Learning activities

Students will participate in summative and formative activities including online lectures, reflective activities, participation with peers, analysis of case studies and scenarios online, online skills sessions, online quizzes, written assessments and an oral presentation.

Requisite rules

Students must be admitted into one of the following courses: HGMN Graduate Diploma in Mental Health, HGMHO Graduate Diploma in Mental Health, HMMH Master of Mental Health, HMMN Master of Mental Health Nursing, HCMH Graduate Certificate in Mental Health.
