This subject consolidates nursing skills and person-centred care with a focus on mental health and illness. Through lectures, online activities, workshops, clinical skills laboratories and a clinical placement you will explore common challenges experienced by individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues. The clinical practicum will allow you to integrate theoretical principles to the nursing practice of individuals with mental health issues. To achieve the learning outcomes of this subject you will be expected to complete a range of written, verbal and clinical assessments within a 12-week period.
Capstones provide students with a way of integrating and applying knowledge and skills gained throughout their course.

Explain the role of biological, psychological and social factors relevant to mental health, illness and recovery.

Employ recovery-oriented principles to nursing practice.

Demonstrate foundational mental health assessment skills.

Administer medications to individuals experiencing mental health disorders using safe and therapeutic practices.

Examine the application of Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 in delivery of mental health services.
