LEADERSHIP AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE IN NURSING AND MIDWIFERY

Overview

In this subject you will extend your knowledge of the components that provide frameworks for accountable and responsible nursing practice. You will explore competency standards, decision making frameworks, direction and delegation guidelines and the Australian safety and quality framework in relation to professional conduct. You will be introduced to the role of contemporary theories of leadership and management, the concept of professional boundaries, health policy, organisational structures, and culture. You will explore the application of digital health in healthcare. Your capacity to engage in your professional role across all practice settings will be enhanced by completion of this subject.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Critically review the impact of corporate and clinical governance models in health services in relation to person-centred care

Appraise contemporary health policy issues and current legislation as they relate to safety and quality in nursing and midwifery and application of digital health

Critique how organisational structure, organisational culture and contextual variables influence the nursing and midwifery environment and the coordinated approach to person centred care

Critique contemporary leadership theories, and their importance to individuals, health teams and the nursing and midwifery profession

Learning activities

Subject content will be delivered via blended learning, using the LMS with embedded learning material and lectures, and face to face workshops and lab classes.
