Care is crucial to human existence. Babies cannot survive without care; through our lives we are called to care for others; and we often need to be cared for ourselves. So it is that nurses, social workers, psychologists, teachers and others care in a variety of professional contexts. We can also care in informal and personal ways, such as with our family, congregation, community, and other groups. Indeed, care is central to many contemporary social issues, including aging populations, healthcare systems, and social justice. But it ialso takes different forms in different cultures. So what is care? How and why do we care for others? How does caring transform them and us? Anthropologists have provided fascinating insight into these questions. In this subject, you will learn the basics of anthropology and how these can apply to caring in diverse places and circumstances. This Level 1 subject is suitable as an elective for all students.
