This subject includes core content that focuses on two future-ready issues for the Dietetics profession: environmental sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait-Islander health. This core content will encourage you to consider the future of dietetic practice and identify opportunities and advocate for change to the wider social, cultural, political, and environmental issues to improve nutrition and the food system. Further, this content will also consolidate your understanding of the ways in which education and health systems can impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s health with a view to bridging the gaps that currently exist in health outcomes. In addition to undertaking core content, in this subject you will  undertake additional, in depth study  in a specialised area of dietetic practice, which may include areas such as: Sports Nutrition, Eating Disorders or Paediatric Dietetics.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:
1.
Reflect on future dietetic practice and identify opportunities and advocate for change to the wider social, cultural, political, and environmental issues to improve nutrition, and the food system
2.
Critically evaluate and construct a systems-thinking approach to environmental sustainability issues with a key focus on food, nutrition and health.
3.
Critically review and reflect on the impact of whole systems including health and education as responsible for improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and/or communities to advocate for social justice and health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
4.
Apply advanced client-centred counselling skills to negotiate and facilitate nutrition, behaviour and lifestyle change and empower clients with self-management skills.
5.
Demonstrate independence, leadership, negotiation, conflict resolution, problem solving, professional conduct and responsibility for own actions in familiar and unfamiliar settings in professional practice/contexts.
6.
Develop effective teamwork strategies AND demonstrate effective professionalism, collaboration, proactivity, responsibility, and accountability to achieve a shared goal.

Apply advanced knowledge in a specialised dietetic practice area to demonstrate high quality client nutrition care planning
