In this subject, you will learn techniques and processes essential to patient assessment, and you will be introduced to history taking and decision-making techniques. You will learn the principles of basic life support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic airway management and initial care of a patient in actual life threat. Safe workplace practices, including manual handling, will be covered. The subject will facilitate the integration of your individual and team communication skills into practice.

Fitness assessment, donning and doffing PPE, AV video sign-off, AV student undertaking form, consent and acknowledgement form and mask-fit testing all required prior to attending clinical placement. There may be the need to travel and for accommodation.

Subject intended learning outcomes

On successful completion you will be able to:

Assess common paramedic situations to prepare self and equipment for paramedic response.

Communicate and assimilate available information to approach simulated incidents to provide effective, safe management of the scene and patient.

Employ effective situational judgement to communicate effectively for safe patient management in simulated environments.

Determine the physiological status of simulated patients using standard assessment techniques and evidence-based practice methods.

Use problem-solving skills and professional judgement to apply appropriate basic life support management to simulated patients.

Use problem-solving and critical thinking to perform effective and safe lifting, manoeuvring and infection control techniques in simulated clinical situations.

Learning activities

You will be required to attend up to 20 hours of assigned clinical placement allowing for real-life experience and the opportunity to achieve intended learning outcomes during a range of practice situations. You will engage in role plays and simulations on campus during workshops.
