To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery, students must complete 480 credit points consisting of: 480 core credit points  Students must complete a minimum of 800 clinical hours in nursing subjects to be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse. Students will attend a minimum of … For more content click the Read more button below. Under the supervision of a midwife, the student must act as the primary birth attendant for 30 women who experience a spontaneous vaginal birth.  Additionally, provide direct and indirect care to an additional 10 women throughout the first stage of labour, where possible, during birth (regardless of mode). Students will attend a minimum of 100 postnatal visits with women and, where possible, their babies. Students will gain experience in caring for 40 women with complex needs across pregnancy, labour, birth or the postnatal period. Students will undertake 20 full examinations of a newborn infant. Students must complete 10 Continuity of Care Experiences. A Continuity of Care Experience involves engaging with 10 women and attending four antenatal and two postnatal episodes of care and, for the majority of women, the labour and birth. This involves being “on call” to attend these births.

Exhibit inclusive and responsive professional midwifery and nursing practice that respects individuals from diverse backgrounds with sensitivity to culture, values and beliefs.

Critically review and analyse professional midwifery and nursing practice and other information to synthesise knowledge to advance the professions both individually and as a community.
3.
Employ evidence-based frameworks to inform systematic and comprehensive women and person-centred health and wellbeing assessment in partnership with women and people across a variety of health care settings.
4.
Promote the role of the midwife, the midwifery profession and continuity of midwifery care to improve perinatal outcomes for women and families.
5.
Provide holistic midwifery care in collaboration with the woman and inter- and intra-professional health care team, in order to optimise health and wellbeing of women and babies.
6.
Demonstrate therapeutic communication strategies in professional relationships with women, individuals, families and colleagues.
7.
Demonstrate the ability to pursue ongoing professional learning and development for self and others through feedback, reflection, and action.
8.
Appraise and monitor the health and wellbeing of self and others to revise and continuously improve practice.
9.
Employ assessment data and evidence to develop, document and modify evidence-based care plans in partnership with women and individuals across a variety of health care settings.

Demonstrate safe midwifery and nursing practice that is professional, accountable, ethical and legal, underpinned by a sound knowledge base as identified in the NMBA standards, codes and guidelines for practice in various health settings.

Work based learning (placement) requirements

Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the Office of the Provost Placements and WBL Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.

Career outcomes

Graduates may take up positions in midwifery, nursing or a combination of both, including positions in the surgical, medical, paediatric, perioperative, emergency, rehabilitation, aged care, special care nursery or community fields. 

As a registered nurse and midwife, you can pursue career opportunities in a range of settings, including: 

  • hospitals, clinics, birth centres and various maternity settings  
  • as a private midwife 
  • schools  and universities 
  • community health centres 
  • government agencies and private industry
  • research settings.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Midwifery may be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
